The authors would like to clarify a statement in the introduction about the reference made to the relative instability of RNA aptamers to environmental insults.
The RNA aptamers reported by Sayer et al. (1) were substituted at the 2' position with fluorine, and were hence more stable to environmental nuclease digestion than DNA.
We would also like to clarify that while the study by Sayer et al. (1) described reactivity of the RNA aptamer SAF-93 to in vitro converted prions, Rhie et al. (2) described that this aptamer was bound to scrapie-associated fibrils isolated from infected hamster brains.
