Message from the New Editor-in-Chief

I consider it a great honor to become the new Editor-in-Chief of Experimental Biology and Medicine (EBM). I thank Dr. Charles Blake (President of the Society of Experimental Biology and Medicine), the SEBM Council, Dr. Martin Adamo and the Publication Committee that he chairs for selecting me for this distinguished position. EBM was first established in 1903 and has been a premier journal in the field of biomedical research since its inception. It has had strong leadership over the past 4 years from Dr. Dale Romsos (past Editor-in-Chief) with the support of Felice O’Grady (Executive Director, SEBM) and Nancy Blake (Editorial Assistant).
How will the journal change as we enter its second centennial? One of the missions of SEBM is to stimulate cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary research. We have made changes in the journal, cover-to-cover, to reflect this mission. You will note the new cover that has a cell surface with an interacting virus particle and protein coated nanotubes and dendrimers floating outside the cell. This represents research today, and in the future, where genes, drugs, and conducting polymers will be delivered by these mechanisms. It represents the convergence of the biological, physical, and engineering sciences.
As you open this issue you will notice other substantive changes. New interdisciplinary sections have been added such as Bioimaging (Dr. Michael Devous, Associate Editor (AE)), Biomedical Engineering (Dr. Jinming Gao, AE), Bionanoscience (Dr. Rockford K. Draper, AE), Genomics, Proteomics and Bioinformatics (Dr. Mark Duncan, AE), Stem Cell Biology (Dr. Mark Magnuson, AE), Systems Biology (Dr. John Wikswo, AE), and Translational Research (Dr. Kenneth Foon, AE). Translational Research will include two subsections: Bench to clinical practice and Bench to biotech product. We have assembled a very prominent group of new Associate Editors that also includes Dr. David Burr, who will lead a revitalized section on Anatomy and Pathology; and Dr. Michael Friedlander, who will lead a new section on Neuroscience. Each of the new sections has a new Editorial Board that is composed of leaders in the respective field. Over the next year you will see Editorials written by each AE expressing their vision for the section for which they are responsible.
I have also created an Honorary Nobel Editorial Board symbolic of the new theme of the journal. Our first four members are Dr. Gunter Blobel (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, 1999), Dr. Aaron Ciechanover (Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, 2004), Dr. Russell Hulse (Nobel Prize in Physics, 1993), and Dr. Alan MacDiarmid (Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 2000). These great scientific leaders from the biological and physical sciences are strong proponents of the power of interdisciplinary team research. They will have access to our Editorial Page to write on issues of importance to Science and Society.
What is my goal for EBM over the next three years? I expect EBM to become the premier journal publishing cutting edge research at the boundaries of the biologic, physical, and engineering sciences. Our goal is to establish EBM as a leader in publishing interdisciplinary research. I will accept nothing less.
