EBM Asian Editor: Professor Huan-Yao Lei

The Editor-in-Chief’s editorial in the November 07 issue of Experimental Biology and Medicine (EBM) delineated a plan for expansion of the journal and enhancement of the activities of the Society of Experimental Asian Biomedical Science, and then selecting an individual to become our first Asian Editor for EBM. From a quick look at this issue’s Editorial Board pages you will find that we have added Professor Lin He as co-Associate Editor for the EBM Biology and Medicine (SEBM) into Asia. The plan involved bringing outstanding Asian researchers onto the EBM Editorial Board, naming Associate Editors from amongst the leaders in Endocrinology and Nutrition section and Professor Huan-Yao Lei as co-Associate Editor for the Immunology/Microbiology/Virology section. We have also added Professors Qingming Luo (Bioimaging), Shaw-Jeng Sean Tsai (Physiology), Xintao Shuai and Huiqi Xie (Biomedical Engineering), and Chunyu Zeng (Physiology) to the Editorial Board.

It is my great pleasure to announce that effective January 1, 2008 Professor Huan-Yao Lei has been appointed to the newly created position of Asian Editor for Experimental Biology and Medicine. Huan-Yao Lei is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, and Chairman of the Institute of Basic Biomedical Sciences at the College of Medicine of the National Cheng-Kung University (NCKU) of Taiwan. From 1982 to today, Huan-Yao has published 165 peer reviewed articles primarily in the area of microbiology and virology. He is a leading Asian scientist whose current interests deal with the dengue virus.

A new Asian office for Experimental Biology and Medicine will open at the NCKU Medical Center with an inaugural ceremony on January 7, 2008. Dr. Lei, with his editorial assistant, will play an essential function towards our goal of creating an international presence for EBM and the society (SEBM). Amongst the responsibilities of Professor Lei and the Asian EBM office will be increasing the visibility of EBM and SEBM throughout the Asia Pacific scientific and academic communities. We expect this to result in increases in manuscript submissions, SEBM memberships, and library subscriptions. All of the new Asian members of the EBM Editorial Board will play important roles in educating the Asia Pacific scientific community to the value of SEBM membership and publishing their work in Experimental Biology and Medicine. Professor Lei, and his assistant, will also assist Asian authors in crafting manuscripts that have the highest probability of success.

NCKU is one of the largest, oldest, and most prestigious universities in Taiwan. It has 9 colleges, spanning engineering to the social sciences and 22,000 students. It has a powerful College of Medicine, shown in the picture above, which will be the home of our new EBM Asian office. Dr. Charles Lin, Dean of the College of Medicine at NCKU, said the following concerning the establishment of the Asian EBM office at NCKU Medical Center: "By establishing its first Asian Office, the Society of Experimental Biology and Medicine has built a bridge to the scientific society in Asia and a highway of sharing ideas, news and discovery of health science."

The establishment of our Asian Editor Professor Lei, and the Asian EBM office, is the first step in our globalization plan for EBM and SEBM. We have begun the process of developing a similar Editor position and office in Europe; stay tuned.

Dr. Steven R. Goodman

Editor-in-Chief
